Q: How can I boot my 2016 12" MacBook from an external drive?

Tried with two different USB-c to USB-A adapters.  Just get a circle with a slash through it.  Surely there's a way to boot from an external?  Anyone?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

What version of OS X is installed on the external disk drive?

 

It will not boot if the version of OS X is older then the version that MacBook shipped with originally.
