Use a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter, and if needed, a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter. If desired, you can use a network or external drive instead.

If you want to use a network connection to transfer data, it works fine with an older Mac running Tiger or Leopard.  I do it all the time.  This document describes how to do it

How to connect with File Sharing on your Mac - Apple Support

NOTE:  Depending on the Mac OS X version, the option to enable in System Preferences Sharing pane may be called Personal File Sharing, and it looks somewhat different.  But it should be obvious how to turn ON file sharing.

If your old Mac has an Internet connection through a common router (shared by your newer Mac), you may already have a network connection between the two Macs.  If you do not, you can connect the two with a standard Ethernet cable.  If the old Mac is using a wireless network connection, it will be slow for file transfer so you may want to connect the two Macs with an Ethernet cable.  Use a Cat-5 or better cable to ensure fastest possible file transfer speed.
