iMovie versus Photos

Photos will import videos from cameras, run them and even give options for trimming them. I find it more convenient to have my video clips and photos of events together in this way.

Is there really any advantage of using iMovie unless you want to process or combine clips?

There are some edits that Photos cannot do, for example stabilize shaky videos.

I import my video clips to Photos, and if I need to stabilize them or advanced edits I open the clips in iMovie, then import them back to Photos.

iMovie will show your System Photos Library in the media section and you open them right from there in iMovie,

I like to add the animated maps and titles from iMovie,or the green screen screen to very two clips, if I want to make a slideshow.

Your Photos Library will appear in the "My Media" tab in iMovie 10.1.2:

If I imported media into iMovie I can simply select the clip in the event and reveal it in the Finder, then import the unmodified original clip to Photos.

But to export an edited video to Photos I need the Share menu: "Share > File" and export the file. And the rendered file will have a new file creation date, since it is a new file. I have to add a capture date with "Image > Adjust date and time".

The “reveal in finder“ works well and I found that clicking the file with “open with”, selecting other and going to Photos (which is not initially in the list) and clicking open imports the file directly. Simpler that trying to do an import within Photos and having to find the correct file.
