How can I tell if my iPad is 32 or 64 bit?

Look at the back of your iPad and see what is the model number. It should be A####. If you have an iPad 4, then it's a 32 bit tablet, otherwise it's 64.

iPad 4 and newer have the lightning connectors.

As SergZak said, MD588LL/A means it's an iPad Air 1.

As Axeman1020 said, confirmed by this article, iPad Air 1 has a 64 bit chip.

But you think you may have a 32 bit chip.

Try settings> general>about> capacity. If the number is close to 64 but slightly less there's your answer

The most distinguishing feature is the camera. iPad 1's don't have camera.

Also I doubt you can purchase an app that won't work on your iPad from your iPad. Just like you can't download an app that won't work.

iPad Air does indeed have a lightning connector.

If it's not an Air but it's got lightning connector, it must be iPad 4. According the wiki, iPad 4 uses A6X processor and it is a 32-bit CPU:

That is an iPad Air 1 (first generation). It is a 64-bit device which uses the Apple A7 processor.
