Q: Why does my MBP say, "Attention, integrity violation!"

Several times recently I've been working away on my MBP and heard it say, "Attention! Integrity violation!"

There is never a screen with this, and I have no idea what it means. On the two most recent occasions I had experienced a crash of my Pages app in the vicinity of hearing this.

Do I need to take some action or run a utility?

Thank you,

Tonia

If that's exactly what it says it doesn't sound like the language Apple would ever use for alerts. My best guess is that you have some web page open that is surreptitiously playing an audio file. The idea being to trick you into downloading and installing some malware. I suspect the Pages crash is coincidental.

    sounds scammy,

    force quit your browser

    CMD+OPT+ESC

select it and click force quit

if you use Safari relaunch it while holding down the SHIFT key

for other browsers if you require a reset see the developers page on their instructions for how to do this.

I am willing to trust you and uninstall the CleanMyMac2 program, as I have been suspicious of it for a while -- stopped using it a year ago, in fact. But I have other folks I trust encouraging me to install CleanMyMac3 -- is it also bad as well, in your opinion? Or was "2" uniquely bad?

Is this the total of your diagnosis or was it just your first pass on the report?

What else do you recommend for uninstalling and cleaning up stuff?

    Thanks,

anyone here will come along any moment and tell you CMM1, 2, 3 and 4 whatever are garbage and there is a class action suit against mac paw last I looked.

I recommend you let the OS clean itself, OS X does this amazingly (Windows does not and trust me I no mac fanboy), any app you send it to do the work for it will conflict, let OS X do it on it's own, it's shockingly good at this.

if you want to wait and get a 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinion about that or CMM I will not feel slighted for you not trusting my opinion by itself - like the email that says "I already read it on snopes and it's true!" you can hold up a stop sign and I can wait. This was a flyby report but CMM is a red flag of red flags.

version queue is not needed unless you work with others in CS2, it was a collaborative tool Adobe touted as the reason to upgrade for print bureaus and design shops, it's sorta useless for individual owners but it installed by default.

the plugins I can't speak of, but if Etrecheck is not spiking them as adware or malware they are either fine or junk and it's up to you if you need them or not

Okay, you need to clarify something for me. It is "MacKeeper" that has a class action suit, and I already knew that was terrible stuff. I find no information concerning lawsuits against Clean My Mac, which is made by a different company. Did you possibly cross those in your thinking when you gave me that advice?

Can you review your recommendation and tell me if you still advise me to get rid of CMM?

    Thanks.

advise doesn't cover it, I admonish you to get rid of CMM and try and get your money back. Again, all these utils are known problematic catalysts in OS X. CMM is one of many, but it's a popular problem causer.

should I buy clean my mac 2 or is there another app I should use?

CleanMyMac 2 causing problems in Mavericks 10.9.1

What about Clean My Mac 3?

I can't open Maps, iBooks, or the App Store on my Mac

Any one using clean my mac 2 on OS X Mawerick? Is it worth?

Describe what you were doing when you encounter that sound. The following might describe what you experienced: Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages.

Uninstalling "CleanMyMac 2" is not trivial. Not only are its developer's uninstallation instructions incomplete, the effects of having actually used it to "clean" your Mac may require that you completely erase it and rebuild it from the ground up. The first step in doing so would be to create a backup, so do that first. The bogus "Attention" speech you heard is not related to CMM though.

Mac "cleaning" programs are scams whose only purpose is to take your money. Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

    • Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.
      • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
      • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
      • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
      • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or OS X are eventually released.
      • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

Thank you. Between all of your answers here I am convinced to get rid of all forms of clean-up utilities, and I appreciate all the advice and admonishments (JimmyCMPIT)!

Because of some slowdowns and erratic behavior on my husbands iMAC after using CMM2 I have wondered if I needed to just rebuild it all, but the very idea is so daunting to me. Can you direct me to a set of simple instructions for how to do this?

    Thank you,

    Tonia

for clean install start with a backup of your system. In fact even if you don't plan on this the cost of external storage and the protection a backup offers can save your rear end 10,000 ways to sunday if it is in place before a problem happens, but it can also assist when a problem is happening.

Any serial # or password necessary should be written down and kept somewhere if they are not easily remembered or obtainable.

Mac OS X and subsequent software does not require a serial # but may ask you for your apple ID.

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

once a backup is created you have a few options for reinstalling, in order of my preference (read: my $0.02)

    1) format your existing drive and remove all data on it. take full advantage of your drive with a clean install of the OS, all offending bad software is removed and replaced with a "factory" version of the OS

    2) install on a partition of your drive that already exists or that you create so you can keep your old data (keep your garbage, squeeze an OS in and loose some space) On a drive with limited space (like your SSD) this can paint you in a corner.

    3) install an OS on another drive and use that as your primary drive (in your case I don't recommend at all you have an SSD and this will be a speed decrease)

if you go with option one you will backup, then either download 10.11 from the App Store, or use recovery mode to reinstall the same os that shipped with your computer at the time of purchase (either already built into the HD which is faster, or the internet which is incredibly slower)

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

in which case you may need to then download and upgrader to OS 10.11 unless you want to stay on the older OS which for security is not going to be as up-to-date with 10.11.

you can also create a boot install of os 10.11 to a flash drive and use this as the installer

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

Once the install completes upgrade and instal any securities patch from Apple from >App Store

Any 3rd party software should be installed with the 3rd party installers preferably from the developers websites. and using the backup as a last resort (in the event the installer require components and necessary files you might not be aware of)

all data can be restored from the backup

    then continue backup

you have essentially created a clean instance of os 10.11.x and now it's up to you (and your husband) to be vigilant about installing safe software and more importantly smart browsing habits.

finally before you begin with a restore of the OS see this article from Apple Computer

you will not be restoring from the Time Machine backup and I recommend you remove the backup during the install and not replacing it until you are finished.

MacKeeper is the biggest scam there is...

CleanMyMac can also cripple your mac...

Both need to be uninstalled immediately.
