Wife's iPad Mini is dead

Wife's iPad Mini has no display. Holding down the Home and Sleep keys reboots it successfully, but the display goes black 3 seconds after the reboot. Battery is at 96%.

Have tried plugging it into my MacBook Air, but iTunes says it could not connect because the iPad is locked with a passcode. The passcode can't be entered because there is nothing but a black screen.

Has this iPad reached the end of its life? I'm sure that taking it to Apple for repair would exceed the cost of the iPad.

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Here is the list of steps to try - you mention that you have already tried some

If at the end - it continues to not co operated then I would certainly opt to bring it in for a diagnostic

If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch - Apple Support

As you surmised, the cost to repair an iPad Mini in the US is $199. A new Mini 2, a far better device, retails for $269.
