Just a data point... My mid-2010 i-Mac will boot from a an external bootable clone HD. But it is soooo slow (being a USB 3 drive running off a USB 2 port).

I realise this, but, the Poster in this linked thread is "between a rock and a hard place".

I am trying to make the process of getting a bootable hard drive to use between an old and new Mac as easy, painless, as possible.

Finding FireWire or Thunderbolt drives in electronics stores is usually difficult and a hit or miss, at best.

And even the Apple Store in my location doesn't always have Thunderbolt or FW800 hard drives in the store.

I am lucky enough to live in a location where I have both an Apple Store and a well stocked prominent Mac-centric Apple Authorised reseller/repair center within 20 miles of where I live.

Not everyone has this ideal situation.
