Q: 2007 A1226 MacBook Pro Stuck with Non-working Windows XP

2016-05-13

Recently I inadvertently erased  the hard drive 2007 MacBook Pro my daughter gave me and installed a copy of non-working Windows XP.  So the machine is useless. It can't do anything and I cannot re-install Snow Leopard or even Windows XP. In other words, it's oblivious to all commands.

Is there any way I can revive this laptop?  Since it's a very old so-called MacBook Pro, replacing its hard disk is simply unrealistic and impossible.

Any advice or help will be much appreciated.

I'm under the weather the moment and my car is being repaired but I will mail the usb back to you as soon as I can. I've only one (2007) Mac. Thanks.

    Hi Loner,

Since I received your revised OSX 10.6.3 live flash drive on June 15, I've been playing with it every now and then. I got my first break when I succeeded in erasing that dominating Windows XP partition about a week ago.  Today I made a duplicate copy of the flash drive using the 'dd' terminal command on my Linux Mint 17.1 computer and then used the second flash drive to restore OSX 10.6.3 on my A1226 Mac Book Pro. This round-about approach may seem crazy to anyone. Since it took you much time and effort to create the master usb, I wanted to protect it as best as I could. That explains why I preferred to play with a duplicate.

In short I just want to report that today I got the Julian Loui's MacBook Air working like a new machine.  I wish I could someday express my gratitude to both you and Apple for your generosity and kindness.  I've indeed learned a great deal about OSX during the past few months and I am happy to report that my health is improving steadily also.  Indeed, there's much common ground between Linux and OSX.

I am glad to see it working. I bought a 32GB USB3 and have a 10.6.8 SL on it. If you need it, please let me know.

    Loner,

Thanks very much for your generous offer.  I think I'm doing fine with your original OSX 10.6.3 flash drive and the duplicate I made yesterday.  I am extremely glad to know that help is always available at this wonderful site. Take care.
