Macbook Pro 15 2008 Battery gone bad with 24 cycles

Hello there!

So i bought a battery replacement for my 2008 macbook pro almost two years (maybe little pass 3 years), and it was rarely used, since most of the work is in the office.

The battery was always stored with almost full charge (so it discharge normally and to never reach zero), but about 3 months ago the power brick failed and the battery couldn't be recharged, so, it emptied, and doing so, now asks to be replaced. The thing is, it has 24 cycles, is it supposed to fail nonetheless? can it be replaced free of charge since it didn't (NEARLY) completed 300 cycles?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)
