How to enable two-sided printing on MacBook Pro with Canon MX490 Printer

Hello

I have MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) and OS X version 10.11.4 (15E65), and Canon MX490 series printer.

When I try to do a two-sided print, the printer settings doesn't allow me to turn the two-sided printing on.

Also when I go to the settings of the printer, there is no option for me to select to enable two-sided printing or duplex printing etc.

When I try to reach the printer settings through TextEdit, I still get the same printer settings and it doesn't allow me to enable the two-sided printing.

I couldn't find any answers online and frankly this is frustrating. I would appreciate a great deal if anyone can help with the problem.

Many many thanks!!!

If depends on whether the driver for the printer supports this feature. If it does, then it would work exactly the same way.

If it doesn't, all is not lost, however.

You can choose to print only odd pages:

-in the Print dialog, choose "Paper Handling" from the pop-up menu, and select Odd Pages;

-manually place the pages

-then do another print with only the even pages

The "manual" two-sided printing should allow you to print on both sides of the pages. The difference is that the printer should print all odd pages first, then ask you to pick up the printed pages and feed them back at the paper tray. After that you hit a button and the printer should print all the even pages.

If you try this printer in a windows system it will work exactly as I said (the system tell you what to do to get the two-sided printing). You will have an option for "two-sided printing" on the printing menu.

But I do not know how to do this automatically on a mac. :-(

Can someone help?

The mx490 appears to support duplex and it does show in your printer dialog grayed out.

it appears the drive type has changed from what you appear to have (13.7.0.1?) to what Canon has on their site now.

if you have not done so already use the drivers Canon recommends for your OS, not a legacy driver.

if that does not change the issue reset your printing system

Reset the printing system on your Mac - Apple Support

then reinstall the printer.

The settings for adding printer on my Macbook are different, I don't get that box to select as an option... 😟

If you open the Printer proxy application - that is, the application that is named after your printer - and click on "Options", what do you see?

To quickly open this, press command-space to open a Spotlight search, and start typing the name of the printer: Canon MX... and press enter.

Do you have an "Options" tab?

I just checked again, and realized that it says "manual" for two-sided printing. I guess this explains why the option is disabled...
