Converting an m4b file to mp3.

this may be alittle off topic here. Search didn't help and can't find where t ask an 'new question' in those forums.

Is there a simple way to convert an audio book from .m4b to mp3? Is there software for this? Or just how do you do it.

To post a new question, at the main Discussions page, you pick the category that appears most closely related to your question (e.g., iTunes or iPod), continue narrowing down the forum categories until you reach a specific forum where "post new topic" appears on the top left of the thread list.

You can also use the Search box at the main Discussions level. Searching "convert m4b mp3" turned up this thread which addresses the same question.

.m4b files are Apple's iTunes music store Spoken word and audio book purcahsed files. Because they are protected files, you can not directly convert them from .m4b format to MP3 format.
However, you can put these files into a playlist, limiting the content to less than 80 minutes, then change your iTunes preferences for burning to burn "Audio CDs". Now burn the playlist to a CD. You now have a nice back up of your purchased stuff, which Apple highly suggests you do (back up your purcahses) because they will not let you redownload lost tracks.
Now that you have your stuff on a normal Audio CD, you can reimport the tracks to iTunes under any format you want, MP3, AIFF, AAC, etc.
Hope that helps,
Patrick
