Deleting files on a Windows server from a Mac client.

So the issue I'm having is how Macs delete files and folders from Windows servers. I am the admin of our company's network and while configuring some folder permissions on our server I noticed something odd about how Macs delete files.

Our folder structure is simple, each department has a folder. Normally we don't manage how a department organizes their folder but each department does have at least one folder that I.T. does manage. This folder we do not want the departments to delete or rename AND we also don't want them to be able to do anything to the first level of folders inside this folder, second level files and folders we aren't concerned about and allow them to fully manage.

I've set the permissions for this configuration and it works perfectly for Windows clients and almost perfectly for Mac clients. Neither can delete the folders that we don't want to delete and both have access to what we want them to access. Here's my issue, from a Windows client if a user attempts to delete the root or first level folder they are denied access and nothing is affected. If a Mac client attempts to do the same thing they too are denied access to delete the root and first level folders BUT every folder and file from the second level on WILL BE DELETED. What's up with that?

It's as if when a Windows user is denied access the system just stops right there and goes no further, sort of a "top down" approach but a Mac user seems to start from the "bottom up" deleting everything it can until it reaches the upper most folders and then stops because of a lack of permissions.

Is this normal Mac behavior on Windows servers? Am I missing a security permission somewhere? I would like the Mac clients to behave the same as the Windows clients as the Windows methods seems more accident resist.

We current use Yosemite OS, Windows 7, and Server 2008 R2.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

this is not normal behavior as I have experienced but having worked with mixed environments the results can be "frustrating"

one thing that has worked for me is

http://www.acronis.com/en-us/mobility/mac-windows-compatibility/

while this is a paid app it does make improvements to compatibility and more importantly anomalies.

if you want to give it a shot there is a demo, otherwise I can't say I've seen what your describing but I have run into frustrating dead ends.

if you have not already you should post on a the windows forum and see if you get any bites as well.
