May 13, 2016 1:46 PM in response to gatorluv_07by Niel,Back up your data, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004; some other installed software may also be incompatible.

May 13, 2016 1:50 PM in response to gatorluv_07by Carolyn Samit,First you would need to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6 so you have access to the App Store to download El Capitan.
Before you do that, make sure your Mac meets El Capitan requirements here > Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support
After you purchase Snow Leopard > http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Apple will send you an email with a redemption code you can download and install Snow Leopard. Then you download El Capitan.

What year is your iMac? You must have a Mid 2007 or newer iMac.
If you don't know, hold down the Option key and select System Profiler from the Apple menu.
It will open to the Hardware section. Look for the Model Identifier. It must be an imac7,1 or higher.
If it qualifies, you would first need to buy Snow Leopard from here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You would then need to update it with software update to 10.6.8. From there you can go to the App Store and download El Capitan.
