trying to stream youtube on MacBook Pro to Apple TV via Airplay. Apple TV shows code on screen but MacBook Pro rejects it

apparently not so simple... a four digit numeric code appeared onscreen (TV) When I enter that code into the prompt on my MacBook the prompt shakes and says the code was incorrect.
You have to use the passcode that you have defined on your Apple TV.

I'd recommend that you disable the restrictions on the Apple TV, unless you really need them.

Are you certain that you are connecting your MacBook Pro to the same network that the Apple TV is connected to?
Is your ATV AirPlay set to conference room mode?
Can you AirPlay from another device?
Yes, I have double-checked this
Conference room mode is set to "Off"
My wife's Mac Book Air is working normally with Airplay to the same Apple TV on the same WiFi network
MB Air is running 10.9.5
Strange. What you describe is exactly consistent with "Require device verification", which is a one-time event for each device. The MB Air may have already done this. I just went through these steps on my iPad iOS 9.3.1. The number appears on the TV screen, and a popup appears asking for the "password". I enter the 4-digit number and all is well. You could try restarting ATV after changing the settings, which might work. It does not make sense for the ATV to display the number if device verification is not enabled.
You may want to try temporarily enabling device verification with a new passcode. Then go back and disable device verification.
I just tried this. 4 digit code was provided on TV screen. I carefully entered the number on my MB Pro and it was rejected as incorrect.
When you enabled device verification with a new code, did you successfully enter that new code on your wife's MacBook Air?
Were you still asked for this code after disabling device verification?
