Q: hp printer software and MacBook Pro compatibility

Was just downloading software for new printer (hp envy 7640) and my MacBook Pro (Yosemite X 10.10.5) generated a warning message saying "this type of file can harm your computer." Should I return and get a different printer? Or is it false alarm?

Go to the HP support site, locate the support page for your printer. Download the appropriate Mac software printer driver for your printer and version of OS X. If there is no supported driver for that model, then return it for one that works with a Mac. See Printer & scanner software available for download for your Mac.

Thank you for taking time to try to help  >> Followed your suggested and same thing happened: The download is successful but a warning message appears "This file may damage your computer." Just not sure what to think — is it really a risk?

No. I don't know why it has that warning. Did you get it from the HP site? Is this what you downloaded: HP-ENVY-7640-series_v12.39.0.dmg? If so, then just go ahead and install it.

    is that all the message?
I normally get "This file has been downloaded from an unverified website and may damage your computer."

If it's from the Hp web site then the address should have had a padlock next to the address with the security certification. if that is all correct then it should be safe.

Thanks. It seems to be related to the fact that it's a dmg file >> Like you, I think it's okay. Appreciate your thoughts/recommendations.

Thanks, again, for your time. Late at night, those messages always make me doubt myself. Like you, I think it's fine and I'm going to accept file.

If you open Security & Privacy preferences, click on the lock icon to enter your admin password. Click on the General tab at the top. At the bottom are several radio buttons. Select the Anywhere button. This will or should stop such warnings when installing software unsigned for Apple approval or coming from an unknown source. However, you need to be sure that you are not downloading software from questionable sources. Otherwise, you should leave the settings as they are.
