Q: Need to move image files from Nikon D3 to iPhoto

I had a photographer here today to take some mountain landscape pictures from my property  He had been wanting to do this for a long time.  Today I agreed to let he shoot as many as he would like, under one condition:  that being that I get copies of all raw images from his camera  He agreed and took 989 shots with a Nice Nikon D3 camera. When he finished he agreed to put all 989 images on a hd i gave him, but he did not have a cable (small USB). Then he said I would not be able to open them on my MacBook.  :-(   Please tell me what software I will need to open and edit the files in iPhoto.  Do I need to get Photoshop, if so what version would best suit my needs.  I am experienced with Photoshop from 10 years ago, but know its changed. I have mid 2014 MacBook Pro. OS 10 Yosemite.
