Saving Internet Bandwidth with Home Sharing

Hello,

I did some quick searching but wasn't able to find an answer to this...

I have an Apple TV 4 and I buy and stream iTunes movies and TV shows on a regular basis. In an effort to save internet bandwidth I am wondering if I download the movies / TV Shows to my iMac and enable Home Sharing, will my Apple TV then stream these from my iMac or will it continue to stream from the iTunes file servers?

Thank you.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

Hi there Antonio0279,

Yes you can indeed save bandwidth using Home Sharing to view media on your computers! You have to go through the Computers app rather than streaming them from say, iTunes and this article has more info about that:

  • To find shared libraries, go to the main menu, select Computers, and choose a library.
  • You can also view photos from your computer on your Apple TV: Open iTunes on your computer. Then go to File > Home Sharing > Choose Photos to Share with Apple TV.

From: Use Home Sharing to share iTunes content with other devices
