3rd gen iPod looks like this...

The 3rd gen iPod does is designed to connect to a FireWire port (not USB).  It came with a FireWire docking cable.  It does NOT charge when connected to USB; it needs a FireWire port to charge and sync at the same time.  Or, it needs the FireWire power adapter (which also came with it) to charge.

It may work when connected to USB, IF the battery is strong (not worn out or weak) and fully charged.  However, it may not work reliably, because the iPod is not getting any power from the USB port.  It is draining battery power as it syncs.

So, there is nothing to "fix."  It is working as designed.  At the very least, you'll need to find its FireWire docking cable and FireWire power adapter, so that you can charge it.  And IF the battery is in good shape (and holds a charge), you can then try to connect it to a USB port.

There are several possibilities.  The docking cable may be faulty.  The dock connector on the iPod may be faulty and not making proper contact.  The USB port on the car audio system may be faulty.

If you have not already, do a Reset (restart) on the iPod.

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support - See section iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector) IF your iPod is a 3rd gen iPod (shown in previous reply).

When you connect it to the car audio system, what does the iPod's screen say or have on it?

Does your iPod connect and sync to your computer running iTunes?
