Q: how should I hook up my Airport Extreme?

I do not get reliable WIFI downstairs.  My IMac is upstairs.  I have an old Airport Extreme, model A1301 that's been on the shelf for several years, but I understand that it can be used as a basestation repeater.  What would be the best way to set up for reception downstairs?

AirPort Extreme 802.11n (3rd Gen), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), with an iPad and a MacBook Air

What is the make & model of the wireless router or gateway that you would like to extend with the 3rd-gen AirPort Extreme? Will the connection between these devices be wired or wireless?

the router/modem is a westel 5701.  I hope to have a wired connection with a wireless connection as second choice.  So far I was able to log in and according to the software I was connected but the orange light on the airport extreme never stopped blinking and was always orange.  thank you for your interest.  I  hope you have some answers for me.

Sorry, I couldn't find anything on a "westel 5701." Did you mean to say "Westell 7501" instead?

I hope to have a wired connection with a wireless connection as second choice.

The AirPort Extreme can only extend another wireless router, using a wireless connection between them, if that other router is another AirPort base station ... so the only option here is to use a wired connection between them.

This is the basis for a roaming type network. Will this work for you? If so, we can help you get it configured.
