Q: iPhone SE and OS 10.7.5

I just bought an iPhone SE and am trying to restore from the backup of my old iPhone but I receive the following error message when I connect the iPhone to my laptop: "The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."

I am still running OS 10.7.5 (not on the laptop listed below--it's a work laptop) and have the most up-to-date version of iTune for this software. I know this is an old OS. But I am still using this OS because upgrading the OS would require me to purchase new software I use for an HDPVR and the new HDPVR software won't work with the HDPVR hardware I have. In short, the so-called free upgrade to El Capitain would cost me about $500 in new hardware and software I use for work. (FYI, just in case folks are reading below about products attached to my profile--the laptop and desktop that are still running Snow Leopard are too old to upgrade to a new OS otherwise I'd upgrade the desktop).

Is there a work-around with iTunes that I can use? Another, FYI: every attempt I make to backup my old iPhone to iCloud ends up with a failed backup message even though I have turned off photos in the iCloud backup. The main things I need to move from the old iPhone to the new iPhone are apps (linked to accounts), contacts, and notes. Beyond that there's nothing on the iPhone I need to backup via the cloud.

Thanks.

Install El Capitan onto a separate partition or drive, perform the transfer, and restart from Lion.

I don't understand why your old phone will not backup to iCloud. That may be worth investigating.

Get help backing up your device in iCloud - Apple Support

Do you have a friend with a Windows computer? If yes, iTunes 12.3.3, which is required for the iPhone SE, will run on any Windows 7 computer or later. You could backup your old iPhone to that computer and restore the backup to the SE. Just another option.

Your apps and contacts could very well be in iCloud.com. Worth looking there as well.

The problem is that OS X 10.7 (Lion, released in 2010) is too old to support the current version of iTunes (12.3.3).  iOS 9 devices require at least iTunes 12.3.2.  iTunes 12.3 requires at least OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion).  So, although you have the latest iTunes for your Lion software, that is insufficient.

    Follow Niel's advice above.

Thanks for all the replies. I unchecked all the options for icloud and then re-added one by one and that worked for iCloud backups. My wifi is very fast so I have no idea why the backup was failing. Anyway, I'm set with that but will try the partition option for future use. My office computer is currently running Yosemite and will be soon updated to El Capitain but I am not always there since I work at home a lot. I just came home with the new phone so wasn't going to travel to the office just for this.

In the end, I also found some other threads that were somewhat similar and it seems that a lot of people with older computers are screwed by these limitations with Apple and iTunes. I would think that the purchase of a $500+ phone would be enough for the company and they aren't going to expect that people with older computers should have to purchase a new computer plus new supporting software just to be able to use a phone. I get that there will always be limits with what can happen with software. However, if I choose to use an old OS or an old computer then I am limiting what's available to me but something like backing up a phone or re-storing from a backup should basically account for ever version of OS10 forward.

Also consider the Windows option I offered above. Any Windows 7 computer or later will run iTunes 12.3.3.

How large is the backup estimated to be? How much iCloud space do you have free?
