Mac OS XThat error screen often means your iPod's hard drive is faulty. If the hard drive is faulty, it may not be possible to access it to retrieve your song files. You can try a few things, but first, this not a 1st gen iPod (from 2001)... Those iPods did not have a color screen, so it would not show a "red x" popping up.
Assuming it's at least 4th gen (the first iPod with color screen), first do a Reset (restart) on the iPod
Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support (see section iPod with a click wheel)
If it goes back to the same error screen, try putting it into Disk Mode

Does it go into Disk Mode? If it does, and you want to try retrieving its songs, do NOT run iTunes with iPod connected in Disk Mode. If you run iTunes, it may prompt you to do a Restore (which erases the iPod). Please post back with Disk Mode status, and whether you use a Mac or Windows PC. If Windows, what version?
