iPod Touch (5th Generation) will not increase battery power

Hello Apple Community, roughly 24 hours ago I noticed that my fifth generation iPod touch would not increase in battery level. Through trial and error I found that instead of increasing the battery level, it would only stagnate at the level it was at. I have owned my iPod touch since about Christmas 2014. I have had little to no problems with the battery level till now. In attempting to fix it, it ran out of battery and went into 'low power mode' where it only shows the red battery. It says it is plugged in, but as previously said, it only stays at the level it is at, therefore it will forever be off. Please help, this was a gift from a close family member and I don't want to tell them that their gift is a hunk of junk. Replies soon would be helpful. Thanks.
