Q: Restart on El Capitain takes forever. How speed up?

Among my regrets for upgrading to El Capitian: when I reset, the process is not instant, like before.  Now the iMac screen goes black, with a circle.  Then blank. And then a long wait while a progress  bar appears.  Then I have to re login again with my password.  What's the deal?

I called Apple tech support and the woman said I'd have to take the machine to an Apple Store (major inconvenience and time and perhaps cost waste). She said my computer was unable to restart in disc utility so she couldn't check for the glitches.

Is there a way to get the machine to restart lickety split automatically again without having a long wait and then having to re login with password?  Would appreciate your help on this.

Please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information

Your footer info is out of date. What computer do you have and how much RAM?

Yes, that's part of the reason I asked the OP for an EtreCheck log.

A G4 running El Capitan would be most unusual. Running Jaguar would be almost as unusual.

    Prohibitory symbol

When you see a circle with a slash symbol instead of the Apple logo, it means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from.

If this is your personal Mac, try reinstalling OS X by using OS X Recovery.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.

    1. Set the default startup disk.

    2. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. If there's no change, reconnect them

    3. Reset the System Management Controller.

    4. Reset the PRAM. Afterwards you'll need to repeat Step 1.

    5. Reset the printing system.

Friends in Macland:  Thanks for the advice. Still need help. I am not a techie and do not understand a lot of it.  Is entrecheck safe? I have gotten emails for check my mac 3, and comments that this is simply malware.  I don't see a slash with a circle.  But I see a spinning white circle.

Linc, I think you have good advice  but I don't know the terminology, even where to find the default startup disk, or what PRAM is. Not even sure how to back up data.

Also note:  the slow start is also part of the start up (but just restart) and I get the slow progress bar.  Also, I've had some pop ups to update the system but the next screen won't accept my user  name and password, despite the Apple tech on the phone who said I needed to do that (and I did) during my first of two calls about the problem logging in from start and doing the restart.

My IMac has this processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3.  Memory is 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.

I probably had no business updating El Capitan, which I regret. i hope this email helps clarify my situation. I will appreciate additional help.

Whether unknown software is safe or not is something you have to determine from your own research, not by taking anyone's word for it.

    "Is entrecheck safe?"

the vast majority of volunteers here say it is and use it and recommend it, it's developed by a contributor to these fourms  and does not provide any service than a readout of what is installed on your computer, but ultimately the decision as to what is safe and what is not is entirely yours to make, feel free to research these forums and determine an opinion for yourself.

"I have gotten emails for check my mac 3, and comments that this is simply malware"

there is no check my mac 3, but there is a clean my mac 3 and it's cited on these forms as a known problematic software. it is crapware and should be avoided at all cost.

When did you contact Apple Support direct? -- If not...

Did you see a pop-up with an 800 number for tech support?

{If so, did you tell the person anything, or hang-up knowing such a prompt

    usually means - you are working toward being a next victim - of a scam?}

A visit to an Apple Store (official retail store) to talk to a Genius about this

issue, could be an idea; usually it is best to set an appointment for Genius.

Depending on what else has occurred since your upgrade to 10.11, other

steps may be necessary to resolve the actual cause of the issue you state.

The EtreCheck report can be helpful, since we're not there to look into your

computer directly, and the report you post to this discussions area is not

invasive nor does it provide any other info besides what you see first.

    Good luck in this matter!
