Add a second ssd to a new macbook pro

Hi,

I have a new 2016 macbook pro with retina display and no optical drive and want to add an "intel ssd 730 480gb"

Questions :

- is it doable ?

- is this disk compatible ?

- would this void my warranty ?

Thank you very much for your help and kind regards,

Tom

iFixit.com shows you the instructions to change it. May not be too hard, but as stated you VOID the warranty on your brand-new system. Worse, Apple may refuse to perform even paid service for fear of damage you caused being blamed on them.

OWC (macsales.com) sells SSDs that they have tested to work as replacements, but they buy their testing MBPs with the understanding that it will be forever be not supportable by Apple.

Hmm, and i guess that it is not easy to switch the SSD's ?

Installing a new SSD in a retina MBP is very easy. You just need a pentalobe and a Torx drivers to do it. Check the iFixit,co web site for instructions.

I mean, can you transfer the recovery partition to the new disk and is the intel 730 compatible ?

To install the OSX and recovery partition, you need an appropriate enclosure (available at OWC) and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the original SSD to the new one. Or you can use Target Disk Mode if you have another Mac available.

Ciao.
