Q: upgrade to yosemite from dvd

Trying to install Yosemite over Mavericks from Yosemite DVD.  Won't install.  Get error message that's something like "Can't install information.  Contact Apple Care."  No other apps running and have run Disk Utlities to verfiy/repair disc and permissions.  All good. Have a 1T HD with plenty of room left.  Late 2013 iMac, 2.7 i5processor, 8g RAM.

Anyone else run into this and what did you do?

Thanks,

chichi

There is no Yosemite DVD. Yosemite is only available by download from the App Store. What version of OS X is currently installed on your computer? Why are trying to reinstall Yosemite? Are you trying to upgrade from an earlier version? Have you ever downloaded the Yosemite installer from the App Store in the past?

I burned one a while back as a backup in case I wanted to install Yosemite at some point.  The app store no longer has it available for download or disc purchase (which I'd be happy to do).  I'm currently running Mavericks 10.9.5.  It doesn't show in my app store purchases.  The disc loads but won't let me get to the .dmg file.

You should have used a USB flash drive. How did you make this DVD?

You cannot get Yosemite unless you already downloaded it. In that case you can re-download it from the Purchases page in the App Store. Otherwise, you will have to download El Capitan. You may find that the best thing to do.

Just used the built in Finder app to burn the files from a flash drive that a friend had.  It was when Yosemite was free but I didn't want to install it then and figured I could install it later or buy it from the app store if need be.  I had some apps that wouldn't run with Yosemite at the time so that's why I didn't upgrade then.  I guess it didn't occur to me that it would not be available for later purchase.

I wonder if I could copy the DVD files onto a flash drive and install from that?  I can open the DVD and see all the files, packages, etc.  So I think it's complete.

    thanks.

It all depends how you created the DVD.  It needs to be bootable.

If you restart holding the option key do you see the DVD in the startup manager. (inserted of course in the superdrive.)

Yes.  It's both on desktop and in Finder sidebar window with the hard drive.

Error msg says "could not write installation information to disk" when I double click on disc that's on desktop.

That has nothing to do with

"If you restart holding the option key,  do you see the DVD in the startup manager. (inserted of course in the superdrive.) "

Yes.  I clicked on the DVD icon and it moved along for a while, then I saw a circle with a slash through it.  Nothing happened after that for almost 15 minutes.  So I just restarted the normal way then.

Sorry to say the DVD is not usable/bootable.

When you see a circle with a slash symbol instead of the Apple logo, it means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from.

    Other possibilities :

Check your AppStore>Purchases  to see if Yosemite is in your list to re-download.

Also check for hidden purchases not showing

Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support

You could also try restarting in recovery and see what is available to you there.

Thank you for your help.  I probably messed up something when I copied the files from the flash drive to the DVD.  I no longer have the flash drive and Yosemite can't be downloaded or purchased from Apple anymore.  I never downloaded it from the app store when it was available so it wont show up in my account. Which was probably dumb on my part.  Maybe I can see if a friend can re-download it from their account and make me a flash drive.

The app store no longer has it available for download

It's still avaialble to those that previously downloaded it. It will be available by using the Purchases tab in the App Store app.

If all you did was burn Installer OS X Yosemite.app to a DVD then it won't be bootable.  In the future look over Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support
