Q: How to reduce the size of a photo from 6 MB to 800 KB?

I would like to be able to reduce the size of a photo in Mac Photo or in Photoscape from 6 MB to 800 KB. Previously I could do this in Picasa when I exported a photo.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

If you change it to a standard .jpg then you can reduce the "quality" to a lesser option to reduce its size. You could use the shareware app, GraphicConverter to do that. You may also be able to do that in Photos when you Export the image. Preview may be able to it, also, but I have not used it for that purpose.

Use File->export. You probably want to decrease the number of pixels and decrease JPEG quality.

Yyes, Preview has this function. You can even choose how you want to specify the size: as percentage, as pixel size and as file size.

Simply export the photo (file menu ==> export) as a lower quality (which gives greater compression) - if the quality option does not show in the export window click the v to the right of JPEG to open the full window

There is not way to select a finished size so you may have to experiment to get the size your want

If you export a 6.1 MB photo out of Photos at the Low (smallest size) JPEG quality you'll get a file about 778 KB in size.
