Q: Deleting and adding an account on an iphone

I want to delete a Yahoo Acct. on an iPhone and then I want to add a new account. Is it as easy as going into settings, selecting the Yahoo Acct. and deleting the acct. and then adding the new acct? Thanks.

If you want to Add a New Mail Account Go to Settings > Mail

or If you want to Sign in with Apple ID

Go to Settings > iCloud > Sign Out & Signin with New Account

If you are talking about an email account - yes

if you are talking about an account that is the Apple ID on the iPhone - then you have to sign out of Find iPhone first - then sign out of iCloud

Restart the phone and sign in with the new ID

You will not be able to update any apps purchased with the old ID

Rock, this is a little complicated to explain. I am helping an older lady. She came in possession of an iPad air 2. She currently has an iPhone with a Yahoo account. She does not remember her password, security questions, nor is her phone number on the account. Since I could not put this account on her iPad I created a new Yahoo account for the iPad. What I am planning on doing now is deleting the old account on her iPhone and putting the new on on the iPhone so it will be in sync with the iPad. I just wanted some assurance that deleting the account on her iPhone and immediately installing the new account, which is currently on her iPad, is the right way to go. I will go into settings, mail, contacts and calendar and delete the Yahoo account and add the new account.

ManSinha, it is an e-mail account I am referring to. However, I had to create a new e-mail address to create the new account. i seriously doubt that she had an Apple ID. An Apple ID is the same thing as an e-mail address isn't it? I am relatively new with Apple Products.

    You are correct

An Apple ID is an email address but much more than that -

It is what identifies the device and the apps therein as belonging to the person that owns that ID

You should be able to see it listed in Settings - iCloud

It is also responsible for Activation lock which can render a device useless without proper credentials

I set her up with an Apple ID on her new iPad. After I set up the new Yahoo account on her iPhone I will go in to iCloud and make sure that it is there also. However, after I put the new Yahoo account on her iPhone maybe the Apple Id will automatically transfer over to the iPhone, or will I have to go in and do it myself?

If you set up a brand new Apple ID, you need to be aware that any purchases, photos, and iCloud-sync'd data like Contacts, Notes, etc. will not be transferred to the new ID. Also, you would have to sign that new ID in all places where it is used:

    Mail

    Messages

    FaceTime

    iCloud

    iTunes & App Stores

As ManSinha also indicated, if the iPhone is currently signed on to the old ID, and it has Find My iPhone turned on, then until it is signed out using the old ID's password, it will remain Activation Locked.

It is quite easy to get the password reset. If she has forgotten both the password and the Security Questions, all you have to do is to contact Apple Support and they will send you a reset link. Remember, if you change the Yahoo account, and she was getting mail on the old one, she also will not have any of that mail available on a new account.

It is always best to make the existing Apple ID usable. Switching to a different ID complicates things unnecessarily.

    Best of luck,

Gail, I have exhausted everything i can think of in trying to obtain this ladies Yahoo password that was on her iPhone. I eventually gave up. She got a new iPad and since I was unable to set up her current account to the iPad I got a new Yahoo account for her iPad. As of now I have the iPad set up on the new Yahoo account. Now I would like to delete the old Yahoo account off her iPhone and put the new account I made on her iPhone. Will I be able to delete the old Yahoo account from her iPhone without the Yahoo password? Some one in her family had originally set up her Yahoo account on the iPhone, but no in the family knows the password, security questions or anything about the account. If I am unable to delete the Yahoo account off the iPhone without the password, I will have no idea what to do next; give up I guess. LOL I am not one hundred percent sure whether she had an Apple account on her iPhone or not. I did set up an Apple ID on her iPad. What I want to do now is delete her old Yahoo from her iPhone and put the new account on the iPhone so it will be able to sync with the iPad. I am fairly new to Apple products Myself. Thanks for your help.

OK, so it is important to establish whether or not that old Yahoo email was indeed, her Apple ID. In all likelihood it was. You can easily find out by going to FORGOT APPLE ID and typing in the Yahoo email address. If it comes back with that same email address saying that the her Apple ID is that address, then you need to contact Apple Support to get the security questions reset: ACCOUNT SECURITY SUPPORT.

If the phone is Activation Locked with that Apple ID, then you will not be able to proceed without the password. And, as I stated above, the ramifications of changing to a brand new Apple ID are far-reaching, and will affect anything that is tied to the existing Apple ID.

So, your best bet is to see if the Yahoo account you are referring to is her Apple ID. And if it is, your best bet is to contact Apple to get the reset link so you can reset it.

    Cheers,

GaL From Maine, The lady I am helping does not remember her password, her security questions, nor does she have a telephone number on file with the account. i think it will be nearly impossible to get into her account. I have tried numerous times to no avail. I established a new e-mail account on her iPad. I am hoping I will be able to delete the old Yahoo Account off her iPhone and set up the new account from the iPad on the iPhone. I am not sure if that will create any problems or not. I am in limbo at this time on what to do next. I feel sorry for this lady as some one in her family set up the account and didn't give her the critical info. needed to maintain her account. Let me know what you think about me deleting the old account she has on her iPhone now and adding the newly created account from the iPad to her iPhone? Will that cause any problems? As I have said before, I am not all that up on Apple Products as I have had Microsoft for many years. Thanks for your help.

The Apple ID is pivotal to the ownership of the device

You can certainly add another email account on the iPad and iPhone but at some point the device is going to ask for an iCloud credential - the best course of action to take - of course gail from maine is the resident expert on all things iCloud - is for the lady to go to an Apple store or an authorized center with proof of identity and ownership documents of the devices - they will then reset them and you can help her plan the credentials and passwords or store them safely

Please make a Genius appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

I have explained several times that you need to contact Apple Support to get the password reset. This is not something that you can do by yourself. Click on the link I provided and follow it. I understood that you were not able to remember the password or the Security Questions. That does not obviate the fact that you need to get it reset with help from Apple.

Again, changing the ID is going to undoubtedly create more issues that it resolves. Please read my post again, and follow the instructions provided.
