Q: panic (cpu 0 caller) error mesage - Mcc won't start up

I have a mid 2009 MBP. Machine has been a bit slow, bit otherwise fine, even though it is old it ran l Capitan OK.

Got this error message over the weekend and the MPB will not boot up.

Apple "genius" said it must be hardware (ie main board) as he could 'see' the HDD on some diagnostic run.

My son has the same mid 2009 Core 2 duo machine (MacBook Pro 5.5 MB990LL/A)

I swapped HDD to the other machine and got the same issue - so I figure it must be the HDD and not a RAM or main board problem.

My most recent backup is 6 months old - so I don't want to just do an OSX install and risk losing data.

Anything I can do? Other than send off to get date recovered?

The fact that you tried and got the same problem in a different computer does suggest that the hard drive has failed. Since you have another Mac avaialble you can try booting the failed drive into Target Disk Mode and recovering data that way How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support Sometimes drives that will not boot an OS will boot into target mode.
You might need to run data recovery software like Data Rescue 4 on the working Mac to save data from the failed drive https://www.prosofteng.com/datarescue-mac-data-recovery/ Make sure the software runs on the OS the working Mac has, you may need an older version.
Professional data recovery could be cost prohibitive, you'll have to make that decision of you go that route.
