Q: Compatibility of SSD with MBP

I was advised to upgrade my MacBook Pro by replacing my hard drive with a solid-state drive. (Samsung 850 PRO 512 GB)

The results were amazing. But after a couple of weeks, the computer would suddenly shut down and reboot. At first, it was occasional; last week it happened many times throughout the day.

Neither Best Buy nor Samsung would give me the time of day. I had owned the drive for about 6 weeks. Fed up, I bought another identical drive yesterday [never mind the insanity of that decision!]. Today the computer just shut down and rebooted.

Is there a compatibility issue here? Could anyone suggest probable cause? The original hard drive never once did this.

Take out the SSD, install it in an enclosure, connect it to the MBP via USB and see if it will boot the MBP externally (OPTION key on startup).

If so, the internal SATA cable is the prime suspect. Replace it. This is common with SSDs in MBPs.

If no success, run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.
