how to identify the orientation of the map (Apple) on Iphone?
Is there an indication of direction "north"? Additional potential features?

The map is by default orientated to the north, if you turn the map you will see a small black circle with an 'N' and a small red arrow. You can let the map orientate to the north again by tapping on that same black circle.
