May 16, 2016 5:37 AM in response to Charsiew21by Limnos,Start the faulty computer in Target Disk Mode and it will appear as a drive on the second computer. Note Apple has removed the secure erase drive feature in El Capitan so if you are using a computer with that post back for alternatives.

May 17, 2016 5:51 AM in response to Limnosby Charsiew21,Thanks, Limnos! If one computer has a Firewire 800 port and the other one has a Thunderbolt port, this means I have to use a Firewire cable and then a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter? Just want to make sure before I buy all these cables/adapters.

May 17, 2016 10:39 AM in response to Charsiew21by den.thed,If you can not access the hard drive using TDM, another option would be to remove the hard drive before recycling the iMac.

Additionally you could put the iMac's hard drive into an external drive enclosure for recovery and/or to maintain your old data.

May 17, 2016 10:43 AM in response to Charsiew21by macjack,Before you recycle it, have you tried putting a flashlight to the screen? If you can see the desktop, then it may be just the backlight which is a minor repair.
