Q: complex animated maps question

Hi all.

I am making a bicycle touring video. I want to use an animated line to show the route. This I know how to do; however, I would like to do something rather more complicated.

At the beginning of each day I want to show the route. For this I must have a zoomed in capture of Apple maps for example in order to show the details. But if I simply do this for every day there is no overall view showing the route for the entire trip.

What I would like to do is somehow show a map that includes first day and last day locations, so zoomed out. After that I want to zoom in to the area that I will cover for that particular day and the animation will show all the details of that particular ride. So the view on day 2 would begin with a zoomed out map that shows the undefiled route of day one's ride, zoom in and then show an animation of day two's coming ride.

Hope someone can understand!

Any ideas how?

Cheers

As far as I understand, you want basically something like that:

    map zoom.jpg

an overview map with the whole route, then zoom incl changing content...:

so, layer#1 (black route) fades out while zooming and layer#2 (red route) fades in ...

like that...? or do I miss your point?

    Karsten,

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the very slow comeback. That does indeed seem to be what I want to do. I am pretty good in FCPX but I confess a total beginner in Motion. I have no problems with the animated line, but do you think you could tell me in simple terms how to zoom from in to the other second image in a seamless way? It may not be possible but I would like it to appear as if a camera is zooming into a detailed area of the map where the animated line will then begin.

    Thanks again.

Hi Keefwaddo your description reminded me of an episode, of MacBreakStudio I think this is the solution to your query      MacBreak Studio: Episode 216 - Cosmic Zoom in Motion - YouTube

I hope it can help you

I'm actually busy with a Motion project ... in an hour (??) I can show..

    basically:

    3 layers

map, keyframing scale to zoom in

layer #2 and #3, keyframed opacity to blend out, blend in...

    <Arnies voice> I'll be back! ...

    Worlds,

Thanks for the reply. I checked the video and boy is it tricky to do! Also, in the video the are zooming in to a centre point. I think I cannot use that method, though it is exactly what I want, because I am not simply zooming to the centre.

This picture is the first map that includes every destination we rode to:

    overview.jpg

This one is the stage one map I want to zoom to, which is basically the top right corner of the first one:

    fuk1a.jpg

In the video they also use about 10 layers. I have to make 8 different maps so I would need 80 layers. So even if I can find a way to line things up it would take so long to do it.

I am hoping Karsten's suggestion works but at the moment I cannot understand his brief explanation.

    Cheers

sooo, here we are, time for a pause (never, NEVER say "yes" to socalled Birthday videos! 99% vertical video, low audio/high background noises.... Apple, why do you sell phones with cameras, when nobody can handle it??)

no, my suggestion is much, much simpler:

    Bildschirmfoto 2016-05-19 um 16.13.22.png

you have a pic of your map, preferred super huge, say, 5000pix wide ...

    add it to your project

select the Group (not the map!), set a keyframe at 100% scale

move forward in time, scale to 160% (whatever)

    so, we have that zoom

the effect, from rough to detail of the tour, is basically a cross-dissolve:

in the circle you see, white and red overlap, just animate opacity:

    Bildschirmfoto 2016-05-19 um 16.13.15.png

first few seconds, white is 100%, ... then, I set a keyframe...

.. move foward in time ...

    Bildschirmfoto 2016-05-19 um 16.13.33.png

    ... white dissolves....

and red, starting from 0 gets more visible ..

    Bildschirmfoto 2016-05-19 um 16.13.40.png

meanwhile, we are very close to map, white has zero opacity, red 100% ....

one move, from raw to detailed ... anything else?

    == edit ==

    haven't seen your maps!

    will try with yours ...

okayyyy - long tour, hm;) ?

from my pov, the easiest way would be:

    overview2.jpg

grab all 'detail' maps, and use a paint app, such as Pixelmator I'm  using here, to create a 'master map' by puzzeling/stitching them together  ... Motion5 shouldn't have no problem, handling a still of 5000, 8000, 10k pixel width...

    Karsten

Thanks again for taking the time to help me. I have looked at your suggestions but everything is beyond my Motion skill. Basically, I only know how to make an animated map!

Stitching together different images using Apple Maps using Jing screen capture and Pixelmator is also something I cannot do.

But your image above gave me an idea. If I have the image of the whole trip area, draw a red rectangular box as you did of stage 1, could I use some kind of camera zoom (or some other zoom) in Motion to zoom into the red rectangle then add a dissolve transition with the detailed map. That way the detailed map does not need to be exactly the same as shown inside the red rectangle box. As long as it is roughly the same area as shown in the red box the viewer would not notice.

If this is possible I can quickly and easily capture the detailed areas of each days ride without needing to be too precise.

The problem is I do not even know how to zoom or transition from one image to another in Motion!

    Cheers

    ....

I told you and showed you in my lengthy reply with the many screenshots above.

    keyframe 'Scale' for zoom,

    keyframe 'Opacity' for dissolve/transition....
