virus in Mail

Is there such a thing as a virus in my Mail program? If so what can I do? My server people don't understand Macs, I think and are telling that's what I have because it's not connecting to certain email addresses such as hotmail. So many people are not getting my emails.

I think they're wrong but don't know what else is wrong.
