How do I get past (-1) error in connecting a new iPod touch to my iTunes

I get error message (-1) when I'm trying to update an iPod Touch that had belonged to someone else. I cannot erase the software.

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), cannot update iPod Touch

Word on my PC is acting up and will not post links sometimes but if I open document in Open Office and copy and paste it works. Here is my previous reply with links

Try on another computer

Also see:

iOS: If you can't back up or restore from a backup in iTunes

Then see:

-1 error

-1 error too

If still problem that means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
