Why does my screen go down half way when I tap the home screen 2 or 3 times?

I can't see any benefit as to why my home screen drops down half way, exposing a black screen When I tap the home button. What's it for?

iPhone 6

It is a feature called Reachability.

Reachability

Reachability helps you more easily interact with items at the top of the screen on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus.

Bring items within reach. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility, turn on Reachability, then lightly double-tap the Home button to bring the top of the screen into reach.
