Disk Utility shows the drive listed Hatachi HTS72505....and under that, the name of the drive: Mac HD is grey'd out. When I actually run Disk Utility, it starts to fix things, but when it get to "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as", the next comment is "File system verify or repair failed." This is followed by "Operation failed..."

I might mention, that it shows the drive with "no room available", which is far from correct; apps zero, photos zero, movies zero, other 499.75, which is totally incorrect. Also: Mount Point: Not Mounted, Capacity 499.76, Used 499.76, Device: disk0s2, Type SATA Internal Physical Volume; Available: Zero KB,

Owners: Disabled (that might be saying something), Connection: SATA

Just came across my phone, with a news blast: "OS X 10.11.4 update causing Macs to freeze up"

All this stuff started with El Capitan update for me; I've already reinstalled the system. Have appointment with Genius desk tomorrow if I can't solve this; Plus, read somewhere that Nvidia drivers on this have failed quite a bit, and have been replaced.

I think my data is safe, but drivers, drive, or permission issue with the update, has it where I can't get to it!

Thanks for looking into this...

- This "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as", the next comment is "File system verify or repair failed." This is followed by "Operation failed..."" typically means the disk failed. A third-party disk app may be able to recover data

- This "Owners: Disabled (that might be saying something)" means nothing with regards to your problem.

- You said ""OS X 10.11.4 update causing Macs to freeze up"". Do you mean 10.11.5 that was just released today? 10.11.4 has been around for months. I have installed 10.11.5 on my 2013 Mac Pro and no problems so far.

Thanks,

I just got notice of the 10.11.4 update to 10.11.5. I'm installing now. Still have my Genius appointment in case there is no success. I have a good feeling about this, because when I re-installed the system a few weeks ago, many problems went away, and I don't remember missing the disk I'm now missing. I understand that the regular "upgrades" coming from Apple, also clean up "Permission" issues, and that may help

Thanks, will post the results.
