As far as what you need to transfer you could use a pocket drive and just copy them to the corresponding folder on Yosemite. Or you could use target disk mode.

If it isn't already labeled as being for a Mac you can use the following instructions to format it. Ignore the "Aperture" in the link as these instructions will work for any use of the external drive with a Mac: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture - Apple Support
