Q: Can't Reset iPhone

I inherited an iPhone from my friend on my birthday, but it wasn't reset. Whenever she tries to sign into her icloud account to reset it, it doesn't recognize her password. Now it won't even let us update software. Is there anything we can do about this?

iPhone 5c, iOS 9.3.1
