Q: Ventilator sound Mc Book air i5 1,6 GHz 8Go 1600 MHz DDR

My MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) makes an intermittent  soft ventilator sound on battery that stops immediately when connected to the current. Could this be due to the heavy workload on the processor when working on battery? I have tried the apple solution (reinitialize SMC and NVRAM memory ) but this did not help. Is there an other solution or is this an apple hardware problem that I have already experience with my previous Mc Book air? Thanks for your help.

Do I understand that when powered by battery, you get a 'ventilator sound' and it stops when you connect to the charger?

Is there any correlation with what you are doing at the time?  Any specific applications?

Is there any drop in performance when this happens?

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

Download and post an Etrecheck report:

    Ciao.

When the sound appeared I was downloading programs updates from the apple store as well as copying many pictures from Photo on the desktop. Yes it seems to me that the sound is disappearing when connected to the charger.

    Thanks for your input,

Here is the Etrecheck report I just performed. Altough it is in french, I hope this will give you some indication. Took away the adware as recommended. To me the details on the information diagnostics of May 17 2016 05:25:21 pm could be related to the intermittent ventilator sound problem?

    Thanks again

To be candid, I did not find anything that might be the cause of the ventilator noise phenomenon.  There are a couple of items I want to draw your attention to:

Rid the MBA of Norton Symantec AV.  Your MBA does NOT need it or any other AV application.  In the Diagnostic reports I see where it has caused some problems. Use these instructions:

    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us

Also WD App Manager has been problematic.  Do you really need it.  If not, rid the MBA of it.

Since you have newer MBA, run Apple diagnostics instead of the AHT that I suggested before:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731

    Ciao.

I did run the apple diagnostics that did not reveal any anomaly. This is not surprising since the ventilator sound is intermittent and as I said before is probably related to a "heavy" sollicitation of the processor needing to be cooled down. Therefore I will try to run the etrecheck program when the ventilator noise will be present. I still believe that the hardware is not up to intensive demand on the processor. Thanks anyway

Last comment: I believe that I can get a clue by turning on the monitor activity when the noise is present  and look for %CPU usage to determine which processes are demanding excessive energy !

It is worth a try.  The difficulty you face is that the phenomenon is intermittent.  That can be very difficult to diagnose.

    Ciao,
