Q: Apple watch sending messages from wrong phone number

I have an Apple Watch and two iPhones - one that is personal and one that is for work. The Apple Watch is "paired" with the personal iPhone, not the work iPhone. When I send a Message using Siri on the Apple Watch or a Heartbeat or Sketch to another Apple Watch User, they receive those communications as if they are coming from the phone number of the work iPhone. Both iPhone phone numbers are registered with Messages, but on each phone, "Start New Conversations From" the personal iPhone phone number is selected. In the Watch app on the personal iPhone that is paired with the Apple Watch, in the Messages setting, "Mirror my iPhone" is selected.

I would like my Apple Watch to send from the personal iPhone number and not the work iPhone number. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Greg

    Hi ..

Make sure both iPhones are up to date.

Tap Settings > General > Software Update

    Latest iOS is 9.3.2.

If the software is up to date, un pair both iPhones then re pair.

When I re-pair the watch, should I set it up as a new watch or restore from backup? Oh and thank you!!

    Hi,

I'd restore as new. If you don't have problems sending messages from the Apple Watch then there's something in the backup that's causing a conflict.

    Hi Carolyn.

Both phones are updated, and I un-paired the watch, re-paired it, set it up as a new watch and now I have a slightly different result. Messages are coming from the correct number, but Sketches and Heartbeats are still wrong. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Restart the Apple Watch ...

    1. Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider.
    2. Drag the slider to turn off your device completely.
    3. After you turn off your Apple Watch, press and hold the side button again until you see the Apple logo.

If that doesn't help, force restart both iPhones.

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Tried both restarting the watch and hard rebooting the iPhones. Same result.

This is neither necessary nor appropriate (nor is restarting your watch, which you only just re-paired).

Force restarting your iPhone should typically only be performed as a last resort, when your iPhone is completely unresponsive.

Thanks Jonathan. Your assessment lines up with the results I got from attempting that. Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

This seems to suggest that both iPhones are using the same Apple ID for iMessage. If so, this is the most likely cause of your issue.

Whilst Digital Touch messages can be "sent from" your iPhone number, they are also still associated with your Apple ID. If your Apple ID is associated with two different phone numbers, then issues can arise.

This setting only affects how incoming message alerts are delivered on your watch (either in the same way as on your iPhone or with a customised choice of sound, haptic feedback and/or repeated alerts).

Yes I am using the same Apple ID for both phones, as well as an iPad and two Macs. I agree that issues can arise as I have experienced them first hand. This post was an effort to find a way to resolve those issues. Gotcha about the settings for Messages. Glad to be understanding that better. Thank you.

The issue can likely best be resolved by using a separate Apple ID on each phone.

It may also then help to organise your personal details into separate work and personal contact cards in the Contacts app on each iPhone and then, on each iPhone:

    - Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > in the Contacts section, check that My Info is using the appropriate contact card for that iPhone.

    - Settings > General > Siri > My Info - check that the same card is selected.

Thank you Jonathan. I am going to make an appointment at a Genius Bar. I have so many things tied to my Apple ID that I don't think that I want a unique ID on just one device out of the five (eight if you count Apple TV's) that I regularly use.

If they are able to come up with a solution, I will post it here.
