I did a synch on my phone the other day and a question popped up asking me if I wanted to backup my music. This was the first time this has happened and I though it a good idea so clicked yes. The phone then synched and i Lost hundreds of tracks of music. These were tracks that I had uploaded to my itunes library but now dont have them on disc. Is there any way to get these back???

Try Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash. Check your media folder for the missing items. If they really are no longer anywhere on your computer, or any of your devices, or any backups, then there is really nothing that can be done.

Those songs are gone from your iPhone or from your iTunes library?
did you have a backup? hopefully if you've backed up your phone your music should be still there?
The music is gone from both my phone and my iTunes library. Ive had a really good look round on my laptop and they're not there. If I do a system restore on my laptop or install a previous version of iTunes, is there any chance of recovering them that way??

No, system restore will not pull back data, neither will installing an older version of iTunes. Data deleted from the iPhone cannot be recovered. Could the files be in a different profile on the same computer, a backup, or an older computer. If nothing else you can retrieve your past purchases from iTunes in the Cloud: Download your past purchases - Apple Support.
