@briansyddell: At first I thought you might be pulling my leg, but I tried it anyway. Didn't seem to help. But thanks for the suggestion.

The screen is almost back to normal. When I reboot, typically the apple logo is on a jet black background. I can still see the icons a little behind the black (the black is a little bit transparent still). But when it first went out, the whole screen with the icons had a vignetted on the corners, white fog over it. Very strange. Someone made a joke about getting one's eyes checked...that's almost what it looks like...like I have a foggy film over my eyes!
