SSD Drive install and Fan Noise in MacBook Pro???

Hello,

Just replaced the stock 5400 rpm HDD in my mid-2012 MacBook Pro with a 480 GB Sandisk SSD drive and now the fan is making a lot of noise. Sounds like it is revving at full speed. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

You can try Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and see if that fixes the problem. Unless you made an error in re-assembly the two should be unrelated. On the other hand it could be something in the design of the SSD. Personally, I would replace it with one from either OWC or OCZ.

To test if the two are in any way connected try replacing the old HDD to see if the fan slows down. If it does then reinstall the SSD, being very careful to do it correctly, and re-test. Check how you install the short ribbon cable connecting the disk to the motherboard. It's easy to get the pins on the ribbon cable mis-aligned.

If the SMC does not resolve the problem, install a temperature/fan speed application.

Open Activity Monitor and set it to ALL PROCESSES and CPU to display values from high to low.

When the MBP gets warmed up (or hot) post images of both for review.

Run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

Ciao.

I actually did that...replaced the SSD with the HDD...and the fan noise went away. Regarding not installing the SSD correctly, the installation seemed pretty straight forward...just take out the HDD by detaching the ribbon cable, then hook up the SSD as the HDD was hooked up. Seemed simple enough. I am not a computer tech so I guess I could have messed something up in the process.

Here is the SSD I am using:

Was there a provision for a temperature sensor from the third-party SSD for the computer to

detect heat? If not, a default for most Mac computers, would be to have the fan run full speed.

Glad to hear you found another product better suited for use in the MacBook Pro.

An OWC macsales SSD would have been shipped with correct connectors to work.

{And if you happened to have certain models of iMac, they are very picky. OWC

sells a sensor kit for those.}

Good luck going forward! 🙂
