Q: How do I connect August Smart Lock to my Apple TV Generation 3?

I purchased an August Smart Lock with HomeKit capabilities.   I have read that the lock can be paired to an Apple TV Generation 3 or 4 so that the lock can be controlled remotely.  However, I cannot find the instructions on how this is done.  My Apple TV 3 cannot find any items when I attempt to connect via blue tooth on the Apple TV.  Any help would be appreciated.

Read this guide and note the ATV acts only as an always on server.  The ATV must be signed into the same iCloud account as your remote control device such as an iPhone which would have the August App to control the lock.

Use HomeKit-enabled accessories with your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Thank you for your response.  I do have the ATV and iphone 6S logged into the same icloud account. The August Smart Lock app is on my iphone and connected to HomeKit.  However, I do not see anything that shows the August Smart Lock is connected to the ATV.

There won't be any "connection" between the lock and the ATV. The ATV only acts as a repeater for the remote access.  The iPhone communicates with iCloud and the ATV receives the signal from iCloud and repeats the request...

As this is a Bluetooth lock, you will need to make sure that your ATV is close enough to the lock so it receives the repeated signal...

Consider walking down the block until you are out of wifi range and then lock or unlock the lock.  I assume the app gives feedback on the lock status.  If it does you can verify it locked or unlocked remotely.  Once you are off the wi-fi it should work from anywhere.

As has been indicated by others there is nothing on the Apple TV that will indicate that it is making a Bluetooth connection to the August smart lock. If you want to test whether your August smart lock is making a Bluetooth connection to your Apple TV so you can access the lock remotely follow these steps.

    1. Make sure that your iPhone and August smart lock are set up properly and that you can lock it and unlock it the using the iPhone app.

    2. If everything in step 1 is working correctly disable wi-fi and Bluetooth on the iPhone so that the only data connection you have is through your carrier mobile network. Test it by launching the Safari web browser and visiting a web site.

    3. If the mobile data connection is working properly launch the August smart lock app. Now try and lock and unlock the August smart lock. Be patient, it has to communicate over the mobile network across the  Internet and back to your lock through the Apple TV so it could take 10–20 secs for the lock to respond to the command coming from the iPhone app.

If your lock does not respond to any of the remote commands try moving the Apple TV closer to smart lock. The Apple TV has to be within 40–50 feet (12–15 meters) maximum of the smart lock to make a connection.

If the remote test does not work let us know.

    Hi!

I've tried all the steps here and elsewhere and am still stumped - the AppleTV is not acting to allow remote access when outside of the house.

    1)  The IOS August app works fine to command the lock.  Also, Siri works fine on my iPhone while at home to instruct the lock.

    2)  My iPhone, AppleTV and August lock are both fully up-to-date on versions.

    3)  I have a 4th generation AppleTV and 2nd generation August lock.  I moved it to within 3 feet of the august lock just to eliminate range issues.

    4)  Both iPhone and AppleTV are logged into the same iCloud account.

    5)  I've tried logging out of the iCloud account, waiting 2 minutes and logging back into the iCloud account on the Apple TV.

    6)  I've tried going to Settings > Privacy > HomeKit and tapping Reset HomeKit Configuration, followed by setting it all back up again.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    homekitconfused,

Let's try another test. This time only disable Bluetooth on your iPhone and then using the August app try and lock/unlock the door look.

What this does is shorten the communication path. It will go from your iPhone to the Apple TV using Wi-FI and then from the Apple TV to the August lock using Bluetooth. We're taking the mobile network out of the equation.

Let me know how that goes.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Cutting out the mobile network as you suggested by going over local wifi and only disabling bluetooth in my iPhone didn't solve it unfortunately.  I'm happy to try any other suggestions !

Unfortunately, if none of my suggestions worked, then I think you either have a defective August Smart lock or the one you purchased is the older non-HomeKit version. If it is the HomeKit version it would have a HomeKit pairing number on the lock or package. Does it have a HomeKit pairing number and/or the Works with Apple HomeKit logo? It will look like the graphic below.

HI!   It is the HomeKit version.  I can command it via Siri and I have the logo and the serial number.  The August iOS software and my iPhone iOS recognized it and is treating it as HomeKit.

Okay! Well, at this point I have no more suggestions other than to say contact August and see if they have any.

Sadly after working with August, doing everything already discussed in this thread and August examining my logs they  concludeD:

"Since this is in Apple’s infrastructure, we’re not able to see any failures in our system. Have you reached out to apple on this?"

So i seem to be stuck ...any help would still be greatly appreciated.
