Q: presentation not displaying on projector

I Am a teacher. I use keynote to deliver notes/lecture to my students. Today, after I finished class I escaped from my presentation and made preparations to restart it. When I hit "play", the presenter view appeared on my MacBook Pro retina (as it typically does), and had no issue coming up on my iPad. but on my projector it kept showing my desktop. I escaped and tried again, same thing. I unplugged the projector cable from my thunderbolt port then rep lugged it in: same result. I mirrored the display of the mbp and projector. Came up on the MBP and not the projector. i then tried to quit the program, which took some time. When I re-opened, the keynote screen became transparent. I then quit out of it and restarted the computer. This resolved the issue, but after my next presentation it was the same thing. I have run a disk utility scan and it says nothing is wrong. I am running the latest version of El Cap, in fact I just updated last night. Could the update be causing this? Also, while this was happening I was unable to restart or shut down the computer. I had to do a hard shut down by pressing and holding the power button. Ideas?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), Keynote (latest version)

Try resetting Keynote,  perform all the steps in the order listed

To uninstall Keynote, you must use an application removal tool for this procedure to work

Appcleaner is free and works well for this procedure, it can be download from here:    Appcleaner

    • uninstall Keynote with a removal tool
    • empty the trash
    • shut Down the Mac (Apple menu > Shut Down)
    • wait 10 seconds, then press the power button
    • immediately after you hear the start up tone, hold down the Shift key
    • release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple screen, start up will take a few minutes longer than usual as the Mac is performing a software repair
    • after the repair and the Mac is fully booted, restart the Mac normally, (Apple > Restart)
    • install Keynote from the Mac App Store

Gary, thank you. While doing this did improve the speed of my system overall, the problem has not resolved, and I have to re-boot after each time I do a presentation. Starting to wonder if this is not to do with my use of the keynote remote feature on the iPad. I think i may go back to my previous remote (a little mono price remote) and see if I still have these problems afterwards.

1 - Download and install Etrecheck, it is a software reporting utility, If you post the report here, I can check if there is anything interfering with your system.

The report does not display personal information and does not change your system configuration, full details are on the website.

2 - Do you have any of the following applications installed on the Mac, they are known to cause issues with Keynote:

    • antivirus software
    • so called cleaning or optimising applications (memory cleaner,  Mac Cleaner,  MacKeeper )
    • screen sharing applications such as Duet

    Gary,

Thank you for your help. The Etrecheck report is below. As for question #2 - I do not have a cleaner/optimizer app installed. I do have Duet, but it was not in use at the time. In testing things yesterday I noticed that this is only an issue when i use the iOS app as a remote for the computer through Keynote. if I use my old-school presenter remote then I have no problems. Still having issues with shutdown/restart, though. I have to do a hard shutdown to get it to turn off and then turn it back on if needed.

    EtreCheck version: 2.9.12 (265)

    Report generated 2016-05-19 09:02:30

    Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

    Runtime 2:02

    Performance: Excellent

Duet is in fact running in the background on your system, I suggest as a test you to completely uninstall Duet, and see how this works running Keynote.

To uninstall Duet you must use an application removal tool, I use Appzapper but Appcleaner works well, its safe to use and its free.

You can down load it here:     Appcleaner

When I want to run Duet, I re-install afresh,  then when finished I uninstall it again. For all practical purposes, Duet is incompatible with Keynote.

I uninstalled Duet and re-started. Same problem happened at the end of this last class period. Now it is displaying on the projector, but not on my MBP screen (the presenter notes), and unable to get any response from the keynote window after the presentation. I could use the keyboard to restart the presentation, but I was unable to click anywhere in the window, it was pretty much frozen. It did the same thing whether I used the traditional remote or the iPad remote. Wondering if I should just do a wipe and clean reinstall of my system?

If Iv tried two or three problem solving methods and Im still stuck, a clean install is usually the quickest and most reliable way of sorting out software problems.

So over the weekend I did a clean reinstall of the system software and restored my files from a time machine backup. Same issue repeated today. Next class period I am going to try the same presentation with Powerpoint. I want to see if this is a Keynote specific issue or a system-wife issue. Apple, you need to fix your buggy software! I am running out of reasons to remain a customer.
