iMac won't reboot or shut down after 10.11.5

Title says it. My iMac was fine before the update came through yesterday. I went to reboot it tonight because the RAM being used was realllllly high and I thought a solid reboot after yesterday's update might be a good thing (don't ask why - just my logic)... and surprise! - it cleared the menubar and quit finder, but wouldn't shut down at all. I could still use the dock to load and use apps. I saw another thread that mentioned deleting Wacom stuff. I went in and cleared out all of my found Wacom items. Still won't shut down. I've reset the VRAM several times. I can do a forced shut-down, and it will sleep ok. Activity monitor doesn't show anything super weird, even though it's still showing Wacom and Tablet drivers running.

Anyone else running into this? Or have an idea?

Please?

Open SystemPreferences (in your Applications folder) then open Usrs&Groups, select the LoginItems tab:

in principle you do not need anything there. You remove the entries with the minus sign underneath.

In my macs I have Canon IJ in there only: this is the scanner driver for Canon printers/scanners/multifunctions, and I have those. This scanner is not easliy started by hand when needed. I don't have apps in the LoginItems, and just start all aaps by hand when needed.

After removing entries, do a restart of the mac.

diegotrystero,

For me, after I completely removed the Wacom software and shutdown/restart worked, I was able to reinstall the Wacom software and everything was fine.

I have seen problems with their software in the past, following an OS X update. Never this problem, typically it has been display anomalies. But, every time, once it was removed and OS X working fine, I was able to reinstall the Wacom with no further issues.

Had the same ****** issue, I reseted the NVRAM, deleted some preference files, did almost everything I read on the web and came here, and in fact, it was an issue with my wacom driver, as soon as I uninstalled it, BAM!!! my mac could shut down with no problem at all! Thank you guys!! This was driving me NUTS!!! you just gotta delete your wacom drivers and that's all 😀

Posting in case someone happens across your thread with this issue:

There may be several sources for this issue, which seems to always point to some background app or plugin that won't let the Finder quit. And many times, it seems that the program won't show up in monitors and logs that it's the offending source. I've had this problem for other a year, and every single suggestion regarding disk repair, resetting PRAM, reinstalling the OS, restoring from a backup, etc did not work at all. The issue will not show up in Safe Mode tho, suggesting that it is a file that runs once you log into your usual user or admin accounts.

In my case, I finally found a thread that suggested it may be an issue with Avid ProTools plugins. Going to /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL and deleting Digidesign plugins (in my case, it was Digidesign_CoreAudio.plugin and DVCPROHDAudio.plugin) solved the issue after a hard restart. My MBP will now IMMEDIATELY go to a black screen on restart and shutdown. Log out also works every time.

Unfortunately, every thread I've come across will all suggest different files. Sound drivers, virus protection software, USB drivers for peripherals--they just won't play nicely with 10.11. If your particular case isn't a Wacom driver or Avid plugin, keep searching and hopefully someone will have a suggestion that leads you in the right direction.
