Q: Export project to mobile/email file size in iMovie 10

Hi all

When I click on Share > File is there any way I can export a project to "File" to suit mobile or email, similar to the "Email" option listed in the share menu?

I could only see HD options but I only require a smaller export size to suit iPhone and iPad.

I was certain that the older version of iMovie gave you different export options that matched the device it was being viewed on eg.

mobile, medium, large, HD 720p, HD 1080p.

Does any one know if the above options are available in iMovie 10 or if there are any work around solutions?

Best

iMovie 10, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

When you share to file you can choose lower resolutions and lower quality settings to reduce the file size.  Expected file size is shown as you adjust these parameters.  Here is an example:

You can use Apple Mail's  'Maildrop' facility to send files up to 5 GB.  See: Mail Drop limits - Apple Support

Thanks Geoff, I'll give that a try.

So the menu where you could choose which device the file could be exported is no longer available in iMovie 10?

Sharing to Theater creates several versions for different devices.  See: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.1/#/mov787d5eaa3

    Thanks again Geoff.

Unfortunately those lowest settings are still too big for my purpose of sending a my project clip via email and iMessage.

The "Email" share option is perfect, however, it forces you to setup an Apple Mail account which I don't want to do.

Is there any way I can use the exact same "Email" export settings without being drawn in to use Apple Mail?

Not as far as I know but do you really want to send something of such poor quality?  A better option could be to upload the movie into  Dropbox or similar cloud account then send your correspondent the link from which they can download it.   You can get at least 2 GB for free.

I've created a video birthday invitation I would like to distribute to my family and friends.

For convenience of all invitees the best option would be to send the movie via text/iMessage and email.

If I was to export at say 720p, can I reduce the size afterwards so the movie can be sent to an iPhone/Android/iPad?

With the Dropbox option recipients just have to click on the link for the video to be displayed correctly on whatever device they are using.  They don't have to download it first.

I managed to share the video to iTunes at SD 480P and then grab the file from Finder and placed it in my Dropbox where I exported it to my camera roll.

When I play it back on my iPad, it displays the video at a larger size and does not fit on the screen. Kinda like it has been zoomed in.

When I played it back in iMovie it was perfect.

Any ideas as to why it has done this?
