May 17, 2016 6:19 PM in response to nnphsby TMHahn,If you do not have a backup to restore from, you will have to set it up as a new iPad.
Go to icloud.com and make sure you don't have a backup in the cloud, first!

May 17, 2016 6:23 PM in response to TMHahnby nnphs,I do not have. How do I setup as new? When I follow "Erase" steps, it shows up in my iTunes but I don't have any recover/restore file to restore from on my laptop. I would like to set it up as New, but it does not ask me for that option...

May 17, 2016 6:34 PM in response to TMHahnby nnphs, unfortunately, the device is disabled. so, only thing I can do is connect it to iTunes and follow the erase process by pressing the two buttons... once I finish that, I see the iPad in iTunes with option for recover from a local file, which I don't have.
Hence, I am not able to get to the step of "hello" to get it to setup as new...
I can really use someone's help here...

May 17, 2016 6:39 PM in response to nnphsby nnphs,I get to "Restore iPad..." but when I click, it opens up a browser looking for *.ipsw file, which I don't have. Any way to bypass this step and get the iPad2 to restore to factory settings?

May 17, 2016 6:42 PM in response to nnphsby TMHahn,Gotcha. Does THIS help?
Erase your device with recovery mode
If you've never synced with iTunes or set up Find My iPhone in iCloud, you'll need to use recovery mode to restore your device. This will erase the device and its passcode.
- Connect your iOS device to your computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend, or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
- While your device is connected, force restart it: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don't let go when you see the Apple logo — keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.
When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Restore.
iTunes will download software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode and you'll need to repeat steps 2 and 3.

May 17, 2016 7:04 PM in response to nnphsby TMHahn,So you saw this... (only I know this says "iPad Air" - it's a stock photo off the internet)
And then you click this... (again, iPad, not iPhone)
Then this? (only, again, it's an iPad, not an iPhone, I realize)
Okay, stay with me here... In the past, I've "right-clicked" Restore so I could choose which backup I wanted to use. If you just click "Restore," it shouldn't search for the file. It should just restore your iPad. Are you using the most recent version of iTunes?

May 17, 2016 7:14 PM in response to nnphsby elcpu,Try the following in exactly this order. Please do not skip any steps.
Turn off your iOS device.
Connect the device charging cable to the computer only (not to the device yet).
Open iTunes on your computer.
Press and hold the power button on your device and don’t let go.
Connect the cable to the device while keeping the power button pressed down.
Wait until the computer detects the device and wait for it to restore.
Restore as New first and then restore from backup if desired.
