Q: Password prompts

HI All

i look after a network of 30 macs.

We have a Mac server running Profile Manager with a single network user, I.e. Every user logs on with the same Username - pupil. This is historical and the children and teacher requires it this way. The client machines and server are running El Capitan.

EVerything seems to work fine apart from one annoying Issue. The administrator username and password box pops up frequently asking for input. Clearly we can't give everyone or the teacher the admin password, but the only way is for the pupil to drag the box out of the way and carry on working.

CAn an the box be suppressed? It's obviously trying to do an update or some function in the background that requires elevated privileges.

Any help would be much appreciated.

THanks

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

Does the authentication dialog box provide a hint regarding which service/app is requesting the authentication?  I think the real focus is trying to identify what is asking for authentication.  Generally, a user logging in as a standard account should not be presented with auth dialog boxes unless there is a process trying to push something.  Are you trying to manually install a profile, is there something in the startup folders that should not be there?  What application is being used when the dialog appears?

Take a look in /Library/LaunchDaemons, /Library/LaunchAgents, ~/Library/LaunchDaemons, ~/Library/LaunchAgents.  Are there startup items in there?  Do they all belong?  How about startup items?  In profile manager are you defining denied applications, startup items, or network mounts?

How about System log?  If you have SSH enabled, you can remote to a machine and watch the activity until the auth dialog appears.

Thanks for your reply and help. Much appreciated.

The authentication box gives no hint as to what it is asking to authenticate against which makes it difficult to diagnose. I will certainly take a look at SSH and system log to see what is happening.

Profiles are not being manually installed we push from the server and that is not changed. Nothing in the startup folder either. Generally nothing is actually being used - i.e. even just sitting on the desktop, every now and then the auth box will pop up. There is one network mount at startup which has had the user password added to the user keychain. This seems to work no issues and always connects and is always accessible - does not seem connected to the auth issue. There are no denied applications either.

It really is just a very straight forward setup with very little going on.

Will reply back with findings. Won't be on site until Friday.
