Q: Wrong Format

Using BOOTCAMP to install Windows for dual booting, the program ran OK i,e, it partioned the HD  in my Imac and formatted it as required. However when it came time to install  Windows on the newly formatted partition that BOOTCAMP had created the program indicated that it could not find the partition that it had created but that in any case it was not formatted correctly. ..... What is going on?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

For models which support Recovery HD, there are similar screens. For Snow Leopard and earlier, OS X versions, Recovery HD does not exist.

Thank you for drawing my attention to the available reference documents which offer guidance on this issue, however I was aware of these documents and have followed them religously , making several attempts, before posting my question on this forum.

What happens is that during the installation of Windows the program asks "Where would you like to install Windows?".After you select the Bootcamp partition the program proceeds to format the  Bootcamp  partition and in the process loses the name Bootcamp  calling the newly formatted partition simply Drive Partition 5.

At the same time it shows the message "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see Setup log files.:

Can you suggest how this situation can be rectified?

This is the EXACT error I'm getting when installing Win 10 pro from a downloaded iOS. Running Mac Pro El Capitan 6 core.

    It just doesn't make sense.

Cause why wouldn't boot camp format the partition in the correct format? Doesn't make sense to have to format and erase all the win drivers we just downloaded for 20 mins lol

Thank goodness someone else has the same problem! At least that indicates that it was not something that I had done.

But we still need a solution?

Thinking a bit more about this issue I have come to the view that it can only be an error within the BOOTCAMP program...so come on Apple we need a small patch in the program to put matters right asap!!

Apple is not licensed to use the NTFS read/write license via BC Assistant. They have a read-only license. BCA creates a FAT32 partition and a hybrid MBR (on Macs up to 2014 Mac models). On 2015 and later Macs EFI boot is used but the partition created by BCA is still FAT32 due to licensing restrictions.

In either case, you must format the FAT32 to NTS in Windows installer. There is no choice. Many users use third-party tools or Shift+F10, but is can cause other problems.

Please also see Boot Camp: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one" alert during Windows 8 install - Apple Support . You must not connect any any external storage or hubs during Windows installation. They can be connected after Windows is fully installed, and BC drivers are already in place.

    I Got it to work!!!!

And I wish I could say it's apples fault. But it's not.

I had another thunderbolt drive that the win drivers must have been copying to instead of the fat ian drive.

You have use the usb drive.

I'm know running win 10 pro on my Mac and it's better then on a Windows box. -foo

Success!! I can now run Windows 10 if I choose to.

After many hours of trying to use Boot Camp without success I have finally found a method that worked for me so I will now try and record what I did so that others may benefit.

    1) I started from the situation where I had a Bootcamp partition on the HDD of my iMAC , placed there by the Bootcaamp program after an earlier attempt, which had to be removed and a single Partition created. By chance I came across a response by "VURLIX" in January 2014 which offered a way to fix this problem as follows:

    a)  Open Disk Utility

    b) Select Bootcamp Partition, click on "Erase" tab, select " Mac OS Extended Journaled " and click "Erase" button. This will reformat the Bootcamp partition into a normal Mac partition.

    c) Select disk on left and go  to the Partition tab. Select the newly erased partition in the partition layout and click the "-"(minus) button to remove it.

    2) Then I read the response above from: "Redfoothedude" and realised that I too was working with my external backup  drive still connected.(nothing that I had previously read had suggested that all external devices should be removed before running Bootcamp). So the external drive was removed.

    3) This time "Bootcamp" ran smoothly and did the job it was designed for.

After the above procedures I did notice that a revised version of "Bootcamp" was automatically installed on my Imac, whether this contained some revised code to cover this problem I do not know.

This is the key. Removing using disk utility is not recommended on specific Macs which also support legacy Windows (WXP, Vista, W7) because it does not clean up as BCA can. BCA also re-arranges the partitions to have a contiguous OS X layout.

This is part of BC drivers package, which is downloaded from Apple servers and provides support for Apple hardware on Windows.

Please back up OS X, Windows, and create a Windows System Restore point.

Thank you to those who helped to resolve this problem. Whilst  the outcome was satisfactory, the problem should never have arisen in the first place. It really is about time that the leading computer companies got there act together and actually put the customer first instead of making us jump through these ridiculous hoops simply to protect there own interests!!
